A voluntary method of quality assurance which is both a status and a process, e.g. Investors in People. As a status, accreditation provides public notification that an institution, programme or individual meets standards of quality set by an accrediting agency. As a process, accreditation reflects the fact that in achieving recognition by the accrediting agency, the programme, institution or individual is committed to external review in seeking not only to meet standards but to continuously seek ways in which to enhance the quality of education, training or services provided. See also Academic accreditation.
