On 25th May the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will come into effect and in preparation membership organisations and associations need to be ready. The ICO has asked the MemberWise Network (in partnership with the Trade Association Forum) to submit 10 key membership focused questions, so we want to hear from you!
In most GDPR related areas the membership sector is in the same position as other sectors. There is good crossover in the advice provided by the ICO for charities, SMEs and the general GDPR advice. However, in several critical areas linked to member communications, data protection officers, alliance networks and lapsed member campaigns the sector still requires further clarity.
Over the past 6 months our Data Protection Ambassador, Paul Dawson Hart (Member360), has been campaigning hard (on behalf of our 5,000 members) via the Data Protection Network, Direct Marketing Association and Information Commissioner’s Office , to ensure the nuances of the membership/association sector are recognised in regards to evolving GDPR guidance and best practice.
Paul commented: “There is currently a raft of variable quality information and advice from a range of third parties across all sectors. The ICO’s myth busting blog has attempted to counter the minority of vendors who’ve leveraged GDPR for Sales and Lead generation purposes and it’s great news we’ll now also have sector specific advice. I look forward to putting forward the sector’s questions and will feedback shortly.”
We’re pleased to announce that the Information Commissioners Office (ICO) Deputy CEO, Paul Arnold, and Head of Corporate Affairs, Robert Parker have asked the MemberWise Network (in conjunction with the Trade Association Forum) to submit 10 membership focused GDPR questions.
These questions will be responded to direct and the content will be published on a dedicated membership focused FAQ page on the ICO website (similar to the charity page already live on the website)
Your call to action! – Submit your key membership focused GDPR question, issue or query by Friday 16th March.
This is a great opportunity for the membership/association sector to gain clarity (direct from the UK Data Protection Authority/Information Commissioners Office) on this critical area and the MemberWise Network would like to thank Paul Dawson-Hart for his hard work/campaigning.
