Digital technology continues to transform the way that membership organisations operate and deliver value to their members. It can provide new and exciting ways to access and experience services and it can save time and money through automating processes.

We’ve all heard the term digital transformation before – but what does it mean in a world where digital change is accelerating? At its simplest level, transformation means you are in a better place than you were at the beginning. Technology is important but only one part of this.

In our recently launched whitepaper, “Pixl8’s Guide to: Digital Transformation”, we explore the multifaceted nature of digital transformation and share our experience of what it can look like for you.

There are lots of different definitions for digital transformation. We like to think of it as delivering tangible, positive and at times surprising results that exceed organisational aims and customer expectations. Capitalising on high performing digital channels to deliver sustainable results is a key element of this.

Since 2001 we’ve listened to many membership organisations who have helped to shape and stretch what digital transformation can deliver at the member and business level. Every membership organisation is different but here are some of the typical characteristics of digital transformation:

A way of thinking

For digital to truly transform, there needs to be an understanding of and appreciation for the digital experience. “Digital” is not just about technology and ideally, every team within an organisation should be involved in its digital transformation process.

A way of linking systems

The desire and potential to deliver more meaningful and timely communications that have impact for both customers and organisations is now a familiar concept to all seasoned digital professionals. Siloed legacy systems are still a major driver for digital transformation as organisations are looking to capitalise more on their data.

A way of optimising content

Sometimes transformation can be achieved by delivering great and inspirational content to your members and supporters. Capitalising on the channels available to you and personalising where possible can give your content a competitive edge.

Giving customers what they want

Monitoring your audiences’ interactions and feedback can give you a good steer of what they are interested in as well as what their aspirations are. This can provide useful insights to optimise and tailor digital user journeys.

Giving customers what they don’t know they want

Digital disruption. This is where the magic really lies. People don’t remember average experiences, they remember great ones. What sets your organisation apart when it comes to digital channels? How can you deliver unexpected, inspiring journeys?
