The MemberWise Network is unique as being the only Network led by association and membership professionals. A core part of our team are the MemberWise Ambassadors; a group of practising membership professionals specialising in a specific area that we consider core and crucial to the world of membership such as engagement, recruitment and value.
In recent years, we have branched out into complementary areas such as governance, leadership, communications and PR, and people/volunteer management in order to show how the membership role requires broader business insight and experience.
We are now pleased to announce that we have appointed the first Ambassador for the area of Finance: Beccy Reese, Assistant General Secretary (Finance and Operations) at Equity.
Let’s get to know Beccy, who’ll be championing this crucial area of activity…
How long have you worked in Membership?
I started working for the trade union movement as a bookkeeper for the official bookseller to the TUC in 2001. I firmly believe in the need for strong trade unions to challenge the power of capital and am proud to have continued to work within the movement to this day. I have worked within the trade union movement for 22 years. I worked in the finance department at the TUC and NEU and since joining Equity in 2020 my role has expanded to directly support the membership administration team.
What does your role involve at Equity?
I oversee the operational functions of the union including finance, IT, estates and membership administration. The membership team respond to members queries around joining the union, paying subscriptions and accessing insurance and pension benefits so are directly involved in providing support to members for non-industrial queries.
How will you champion your ambassador subject area (finance)?
I believe numbers tell stories especially when related to money. I’m an advocate for ensuring finance staff are present when strategic discussions are taking place.
What advice would you give to others also working in membership?
Understand what makes the organisation tick and make sure its values align with yours.
Tell us something we don’t know about you!
I volunteer for a week in the summer of the Nature Reserve on Skomer Island off the Pembrokeshire coast and am learning some Welsh for my next stint.
