The MemberWise Network is unique as being the only Network led by association and membership professionals. A core part of our team are the MemberWise Ambassadors; a group of practising membership professionals specialising in a specific area that we consider core and crucial to the world of membership such as engagement, recruitment and value.

In recent years, we have branched out into complementary areas such as governance, leadership, communications and PR, and people/volunteer management in order to show how the membership role requires broader business insight and experience.

We are now pleased to announce that we have appointed a second Ambassador to work alongside Simons Edwards from the IET in the area of governance: Amy Rose, Head of Governance and Compliance at the NHS Confederation.

Let’s get to know Amy, who’ll be championing this crucial area of activity…

How long have you worked in Membership?

My whole career has involved working for membership-based organisations:  The IEMA (a professional standards membership body), The Wildlife Trusts, LIVES, a Lincolnshire membership charity and finally NHS Confederation.  All have different relationships with their members but all face similar challenges around effective membership engagement.

What does your role involve at the NHS Confederation?

My responsibilities include all governance and compliance.  This means ensuring a strong board of trustees and committees, effective risk management and compliance around things like data protection, safeguarding but also very developmental on areas such as ESG, youth engagement.

How will you champion your ambassador subject area (governance)?

There’s some really interesting debates and innovations around governance happening at the moment that I really would like to bring into a membership context.

What advice would you give to others also working in membership?

Keep learning and don’t do governance for governance’s sake. Really understand all aspects of the organisation to truly understand how governance, when done right can really make such a big impact. This may mean your career path is a bit of a zigzag but it will be worth it as you will be dealing with issues that cut right across the organisation.

Tell us something we don’t know about you!

I’ve got an identical twin and we were down to the last auditions to be in the sequel to the 1990s Five Children and It children’s series where they wanted to use twins to save some CGI when a girl wishes for a twin.  We didn’t get it and my childhood acting career never did take off beyond local am-dram!

The MemberWise Team welcomes Amy on board as MemberWise Ambassador (Governance).
