1. Please can you tell us a bit about your association and your role there.
The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) is a world leading scientific society, with a mission to advance the chemical sciences and support the global chemistry community. We’re passionate about fostering a thriving network of professionals, researchers, and educators to drive progress in the field.
As the Member Experience Manager, my role revolves around ensuring that our members have a seamless, engaging, and valuable experience at every touchpoint – a role that never stops creating new challenges. Whether it’s through digital content, member support, or creating opportunities for professional development, my goal is to make sure our members feel connected, supported, and inspired to make the most of their membership.
2. Why did you decide to step into a chair role for Digital Excellence 2025?
I’m really passionate about the intersection of technology and member engagement, and I’m excited to be in a position where I can help guide this important conversation at Digital Excellence 2025. Over the years, I’ve seen firsthand how digital innovation can completely transform the way associations connect with and deliver value to their members. But it’s not just about the tools and platforms—it’s about making those tools work for people in ways that truly resonate and create impact. The Digital for Member Engagement and Value stream represents an incredible opportunity to explore the future of digital strategy in membership organisations and to showcase the inspiring, forward-thinking initiatives happening across the sector.
3. What do you see as the key challenges for associations with digital for next year or so?
One of the biggest challenges for associations is keeping up with the rapid pace of digital transformation. The tools, technologies, and member expectations are constantly evolving, and it can be overwhelming to stay ahead of the curve. Associations often have to balance maintaining traditional engagement methods with introducing new digital strategies, all while ensuring that the core values of connection, community, and member value are maintained. Another challenge is ensuring that the digital experiences they create are inclusive and accessible to all members, which can require a significant shift in mindset and infrastructure. And then, of course, there’s the question of measuring the effectiveness of digital initiatives—how do we know what’s truly driving engagement and delivering value? As we look ahead, I believe associations will need to focus on making data-driven decisions, embracing agile and adaptable strategies, and finding creative ways to make digital engagement feel personal and meaningful, even in a virtual world.
4. What are you looking forward to most at this year’s Digital Excellence Conference?
I’m most excited about the chance to bring together thought leaders and practitioners who are at the forefront of digital innovation in the membership sector. We’ve got some incredible sessions lined up this year, from transforming member engagement with gamification and augmented reality to mastering engagement scoring for deeper, more loyal relationships. There’s so much to learn from the shared experiences of others, and the chance to collaborate with peers and explore new ideas always leaves me feeling inspired. I think this year’s conference will be a fantastic catalyst for new thinking and new partnerships.
5. Why do you feel it’s important for association and membership professionals to attend Digital Excellence this year?
This is a pivotal moment for associations. Digital transformation is not just a trend—it’s a necessity, and it’s reshaping the way we engage with our members, deliver value, and even think about our own business models. Attending Digital Excellence is an opportunity to step into that future, to learn from the experiences of others who are already navigating these changes, and to walk away with practical insights and strategies that can make an immediate impact. Whether you’re exploring new ways to deliver digital content, using data to drive engagement, or embracing new technologies to enhance member experiences, this conference will arm you with the knowledge and inspiration you need to stay competitive and relevant. The conversations and sessions are crafted to not just inform, but to spark action, and that’s why it’s so important for professionals in the sector to be part of it.
