We are now pleased to announce that we have appointed a new Ambassador in the area of Community – Introducing Kayleigh Mapstone, Head of Membership and Projects at British Mensa.

Let’s get to know Kayleigh (and the high profile professional body that she currently works for) who’ll be championing this crucial/developing area of activity…

Tell us about the membership body you currently work for…

British Mensa, founded in 1946, is a society for individuals who score within the top 2% on an approved intelligence test. The organisation’s name, meaning “table” in Latin, represents the equality of its members regardless of background. British Mensa provides a platform for intellectual and social engagement for over 17,000 members across the UK and Ireland. It is part of the wider Mensa community, which spans over 100 countries and includes around 140,000 members globally.

Tell us about your role…

As Head of Membership and Projects at British Mensa, I oversee key initiatives that enhance the member experience. My responsibilities include managing teams, implementing strategies to improve membership engagement, and leading digital transformation projects like the new CRM, website, and member portal. I aim to create environments where members can interact, learn, and share ideas.

Previous Membership Bodies/membership-related experience and number of years’ experience working ‘within membership’

With over 14 years in the membership sector, I previously held the role of Head of Operations and Continuous Development for a professional membership organisation and Trade Union for Pharmacists. I gained valuable experience working with members in various capacities and developed a passion for fostering strong member relationships.

Short overview of any recent key membership related achievements

Since joining British Mensa in 2022, I have successfully led a major transformation project that included implementing a new CRM system, website, member portal, and community platform. These enhancements have significantly improved the member experience and set the foundation for future growth.

How did you get into membership?

Like many, I stumbled into the membership sector by chance but quickly found my niche. I’ve remained ever since, drawn to the unique challenges and opportunities within the sector.

Involvement with the network in the past

I’ve had the privilege of presenting at a MemberWise conference and being involved in a webinar, which allowed me to share my experiences with the wider membership community. Attending the last four conferences has been particularly valuable for connecting with peers and staying informed on key sector trends.

What are your current goals/challenges from a membership perspective?

My current focus is on growing and engaging our membership by enhancing the ways members can connect and interact using our new platforms. We’re working on creating more opportunities for meaningful engagement and ensuring that British Mensa continues to provide a dynamic and valuable experience for all our members.

How will you will champion your ambassador subject area?

I’m passionate about leveraging online communities to bring members together, share knowledge, and create meaningful connections. As a MemberWise Ambassador, I will advocate for developing and optimising these platforms as core benefits for membership.

If you could recommend one thing to a membership/association professional starting out in a role similar to yours, what would it be?

Network! The membership sector is incredibly collaborative. The challenges you face are likely ones others have encountered before. You’ll always find someone willing to help. Also, build strong partnerships with your suppliers—they are key to your success.

Something unusual/unique about you…

I started writing a children’s book 3 years ago that I have yet to complete and publish, it keeps moving to the bottom of my ever growing to do list!
