The MemberWise Network is unique as being the only Network led by association and membership professionals. A core part of our team are the MemberWise Ambassadors; a group of practising membership professionals specialising in a specific area that we consider core and crucial to the world of membership such as engagement, recruitment and value.

In recent years, we have branched out into complementary areas such as governance, leadership, communications and PR, and people/volunteer management in order to show how the membership role requires broader business insight and experience.

We are now pleased to announce that we have appointed a second Ambassador to work alongside Sarah Alder from Cranmore Digital in the area of communities: Jon Jeffrey, Head of Community at BCS.

Let’s get to know Jon, who’ll be championing this crucial area of activity…

How long have you worked in Membership?

I’ve worked in the sector for 15 years with BCS in various roles ranging from public policy, community and communications. I have been in post as Head of Community at BCS for three years.

What does your role involve at the BCS?

I am responsible for 5 direct reports who provide stewardship and administrative support. As a team we support over 100 member groups, made up of 700+ volunteers who in the last year alone delivered over 350 community events, providing networking for members of the profession and inspiring the next generation of the profession. Post pandemic we have expanded our community offering to online made up of 3000+ members and we have an ambitious roadmap to grow online community to 10,000 members by August 2023.

How will you champion your ambassador subject area (community)?

I want to champion the exchange of knowledge to build our collective understanding of the role of online and face to face communities in membership and professional associations.

What advice would you give to others also working in membership?

Community is fundamentally about people, the characteristics of being a good friend will serve you well in being a good community leader – be trustworthy, have empathy for others and act with integrity.

Tell us something we don’t know about you!

My wife and I recently welcomed our first child into the world. Which isn’t entirely unique or unusual but its headline news in our little bubble.
