Please can you tell us a bit about your association and your role there?
I’m Director of Profession for the CIPD. We are the professional body for HR and People Development professionals and we are over 100 years young and 160,000 members strong. My role is to make sure that the needs of the profession are matched by our proposition and that we are leading and serving it effectively.
What do you see as the key challenges for associations with digital in 2024 and beyond?
A few years ago it seemed like the pace of change was dizzying, yet now it seems as though the digital space has found another 3 gears to go up through. Responding to the implications in changes of behaviour or circumstance for your customers and members, whilst simultaneously puzzling through the implications for the organisation directly is a real challenge. It’s a wicked problem and a rapidly evolving one, but it brings opportunities too.
Could you tell us what you are looking forward to in chairing the Digital for Member Engagement & Value stream, and the conference as a whole?
I’m really looking forward to the range of organisations that are presenting in the stream. They vary in size, history, purpose and formality so you can be guaranteed of a really good range of solutions, but kept within a set of common themes. I think understanding how we use technology to bring people together, rather than lose connections is really important, so that notion of community, that will be in several of the sessions, is one I’ll be paying close attention to.
Why do you feel it’s important for association and membership professionals to attend Digital Excellence 2024 next year?
I think this landscape is changing really rapidly and this year will see so many organisations facing into iterations of very similar problems. Hearing from organistions that are trying to – and in some cases brilliantly succeeding – in solving the problems facing your organisation is a truly smart investment of time.
