1. Please can you tell us a bit about your association and your role there?
I’m the Executive Director at British Mensa, where I’ve been leading a real shift in how we think about the future of the society. Over the past few years, we’ve focused heavily on modernisation—whether that’s improving member engagement, embracing digital, or setting a bold new direction through our 2025–2027 strategy. It’s an exciting time for us—we’re aiming for membership growth for the first time in 25 years, and that’s bringing a real sense of momentum and purpose across the team.
2. Why did you decide to step into a chair role for Digital Excellence 2024?
Digital transformation has been a big part of my journey over the last few years, and I’ve always found Digital Excellence to be such a valuable space—full of energy, ideas, and honest conversations. Taking on the chair role felt like a great way to give something back and support others doing brilliant things across the sector. It’s also a great excuse to connect with peers and keep learning from the challenges and wins everyone’s facing.
3. What do you see as the key challenges for associations with digital for the next year or so?
For many associations, the real challenge is moving from quick fixes to proper digital strategy. It’s not just about launching something online—it’s about designing experiences that genuinely work for members and feel joined-up. Legacy systems, tight budgets, and capacity often get in the way, but the biggest hurdle is often cultural: getting people on board with change and helping teams feel confident enough to try new things.
4. What are you looking forward to most at this year’s Digital Excellence Conference?
The buzz! It’s always such a brilliant atmosphere—people are open, honest, and willing to share what’s really going on behind the scenes. I’m especially looking forward to hearing from organisations that are doing fresh, creative things around engagement and personalisation, and I love the conversations that happen in between sessions—they’re often the most inspiring.
5. Why do you feel it’s important for association and membership professionals to attend Digital Excellence this year?
Because this stuff matters. Our members expect more than ever, and if we want to stay relevant, we need to keep evolving. Whether you’re exploring new ideas or tackling long-standing challenges, Digital Excellence is the place to get inspired, find practical solutions, and connect with people who just get it. It’s not about being perfect—it’s about being part of a community that’s all trying to move things forward.
Digital Excellence 2024 Thursday 15th May, Novotel London West hotel, is delivered by the MemberWise Network and is formally accredited by The CPD Standards Office.
