The MemberWise Network is unique as being the only Network led by association and membership professionals. A core part of our team are the MemberWise Ambassadors; a group of practising membership professionals specialising in a specific area that we consider core and crucial to the world of membership such as engagement, recruitment and value.

In recent years, we have branched out into complementary areas such as governance, leadership, communications and PR, and people/volunteer management in order to show how the membership role requires broader business insight and experience.

We are now pleased to announce that we have appointed a second Ambassador to work alongside Dan Bailey from the ECA in the area of digital transformation: Katie Hill, Operations and Governance Manager at AGCAS.

Let’s get to know Katie, who’ll be championing this crucial area of activity…

How long have you worked in Membership?

I’ve not worked in the membership sector before but have enjoyed being a member of several organisations myself. I was an AGCAS member in my previous role in a university careers service, and was impressed by the enthusiasm of volunteers, research outputs and eloquent advocacy. When they said they were looking for someone with my skillset to lead on systems review/replacement, I jumped at the chance to join them.

What does your role involve at AGCAS?

My role was created 6 months ago, increasing the AGCAS staff team to 16 people. Our team is responsible for managing training/event bookings, website updates and our schedule of regular member email communications, the design and publication of our thrice yearly magazine, recruitment to committees and task groups, processing and updating memberships and anything else that crops up. As Operations and Governance Manager I support our Board and fulfil a range of underpinning functions, including being AGCAS’ HR representative, Privacy Officer, policy guru, and systems specialist. Over the next 12-18 months I will project manage the review and replacement of all our member-facing systems.

How will you champion your ambassador subject area (digital transformation)?

I have an unshakeable belief that you can always make something work a little better, and that members deserve the best experience and value we can offer.

What advice would you give to others also working in membership?

Join MemberWise and get on the forum (I’m not on commission, promise). And reach out to suppliers (the good ones are up for a good chat and not a hard sell). There are so many people ready, willing and able to help so spend time developing your network and get involved. You’ll learn a lot, and quickly.

Tell us something we don’t know about you!

When I was considerably younger and far less responsible than now, I was nearly thrown out of a Coldplay gig for trying to mosh to ‘Yellow’.
