The MemberWise Network is unique as being the only Network led by association and membership professionals. A core part of our team are the MemberWise Ambassadors; a group of practising membership professionals specialising in a specific area that we consider core and crucial to the world of membership such as engagement, recruitment and value.
In recent years, we have branched out into complementary areas such as governance, leadership, communications and PR, and people/volunteer management in order to show how the membership role requires broader business insight and experience.
We are now pleased to announce that we have appointed a second Ambassador to work alongside Lisa Goldsmith from CILIP in the area of member data: John Cottrell, Head of Membership at CAMRA.
Let’s get to know John, who’ll be championing this crucial area of activity…
How long have you worked in Membership?
After leaving University with a degree in Psychology I worked in Marketing for the National Blood service before moving to CAMRA. I have worked from Membership Marketing to service and now combine my experience with project management and GDPR.
What does your role involve at CAMRA?
I am Head of Membership which is one of the teams that sit within the commercial division for CAMRA. I am directly responsible for membership recruitment, retention, service delivery and GDPR compliance. I have a team of seven.
How will you champion your ambassador subject area (member data)?
Ensuring Data Protection is on the agenda for all membership organisations is key to ensuring customer / member confidence. As an ambassador I will advocate pragmatic advice is provided to enable organisations are clear in the way they operate to ensure compliance as well having confidence in their decisions.
What advice would you give to others also working in membership?
Ensure you keep clear documentation of all processes for your own reference. What is currently happening, what you would like to happen and the void in the middle which you need to use to create the road map to get to where you want to be.
Tell us something we don’t know about you
I love dogs and help support a dog home in Suffolk; we have had three rescues over the years from them.
