The MemberWise Network is unique as being the only Network led by association and membership professionals. A core part of our team are the MemberWise Ambassadors; a group of practising membership professionals specialising in a specific area that we consider core and crucial to the world of membership such as engagement, recruitment and value.
In recent years, we have branched out into complementary areas such as governance, leadership, communications and PR, and people/volunteer management in order to show how the membership role requires broader business insight and experience.
We are now pleased to announce that we have appointed a second Ambassador to work alongside Emma Day from the British Horse Society in the area of member value: Darren Shepherd, Regional Director (North) at the British Printing Industries Federation.
Let’s get to know Darren, who’ll be championing this crucial area of activity…
How long have you worked in Membership?
I was a membership “newbie” when I joined the BPIF in 2014 having worked commercially within the print industry for almost 30 years.
What does your role involve at the BPIF?
The Regional Director role sits within “membership” and is fully responsible for the member experience and value delivery to over 350 member organisations and an equal number of profiled new membership prospects within an allocated geographical region. The Northern Region operates with a dedicated Account Executive alongside specialist business support advisers and training coordinators from a Hub office situated centrally within the Region.
How will you champion your ambassador subject area (member value)?
I believe strongly that the sector must champion Member Value and will advocate that this sits at the core of all membership processes and activities.
What advice would you give to others also working in membership?
Commit time to get actively involved in the Memberwise network. Work through the training sessions and literature produced and network with colleagues and industry professionals as their experiences will support you within your role.
Tell us something we don’t know about you!
My hobby for many years was barefoot water skiing, and I spent 2 weeks at a training school in Florida learning to backwards barefoot ski.
