Having worked in technology for over 35 years (and online for 25 years), I’ve come to appreciate the pace of change and how quickly technology strategy needs to be revisited.

When the Web emerged as a content delivery platform in the mid-90s, I thought it provided the ultimate answer for organisations to provide services and value to their members.

So it’s a bit jarring that now, in the span of the last 10 years, the centre of our technology universe has shifted and members have turned to a new medium.

Where have all your members gone? They’ve gone mobile.

The shift began as members began expecting their association websites to be responsive and render successfully on their mobile devices. Those expectations have grown to include native apps for iOS and Android that provide additional value and new capabilities for members.

Adoption and use of apps in the UK and Europe is rising fast. According to Flurry Analytics, the average person is spending nearly 5 hours a day on their mobile device, and over 90% of that time is spent using apps.

Mobile apps, and specifically member engagement and event apps, provide an accessible and robust delivery mechanism for content and services.

In the case of MemberWise, the MemberWise Conferences app was downloaded and used by 93% of delegates at the recent Digital Excellence conference, This compares to just 60% who downloaded the app 12 months ago for the 2018 conference.

As Richard Gott noted in his opening DigitalX keynote, US membership organisations often have a more business-like approach to adoption of new technologies than their UK counterparts.

In fact, many US organisations started their mobile app journeys nearly 10 years ago and are now on their 3rd or 4th generation of apps. Organisations in the UK can benefit from seeing what has worked and not worked in the US, including adoption approaches that best match their needs and budgets.

The important thing is to get started. Mobile isn’t going away, and member expectations for access to content and services are growing.
